The 2012 Grand Slam of Golf will be kicking off on Tuesday.  The well-known PGA gathering traditionally brings together the current year's winners of the  four majors.  Padraig Harrington, a late replacement for the Bermuda event, is looking to make his third appearance the charm after coming up short twice.

Harrington accepted an invitation to play at the Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton following British Open winner Ernie Els' withdrawal on Saturday due to an ankle injury.  According to the Chicago Tribune, the Irishman is clearly looking to retribution.

"I've come close twice in Grand Slams and hopefully it will be that close coming down the stretch this week and it would fall in my favour."

Harrington was previously defeated by Argentinean Angel Cabrera in a playoff for the 2007 crown and was also closely beaten by Jim Furyk of the U.S. in 2008.

"It's funny, I can't remember the playoff which I obviously lost to Jim Furyk, but I really remember the one I lost to Cabrera.  He got the last (hole) to get into the playoff.  I thought I had it won I remember that one all right."

Before getting his late entry into the Bermuda event, Harrington had initially planned to be in action at this week's European Tour, which is the BMW Masters at Lake Malaren Golf Club in Shanghai.

"I was due to travel to China on Sunday night.  So on Friday, I was practicing and my manager rang me and said there's a possibility that Ernie may pull out and would I be interested.  I said yeah, I'd be interested."

The Grand Slam of Golf is considered "the most exclusive tournament in golf."  The prestigious event took place in Hawaii from 1991-2006 before its eventual switch to Bermuda in 2007.
