A photo showing the Statue of Liberty with Hurricane Sandy behind has gone viral.

However, it's not real.

The photo, dubbed "Frankenstorm", buzzed over social media on Monday. It is a fake image mash-up from a photo of the famous New York landmark with the backdrop of "storm-darkened skies over Nebraska," according to The Philly Post.

Snopes.com commented on the fake image saying"[...] it's a digital manipulation created by merging a picture of the Statue of Liberty with a separate photograph of a supercell thunderstorm snapped in Nebraska by photographer Mike Hollingshead on May 28, 2004."
According to the National Hurricane Center, on Monday at 5 pm ET the storm is moving at a northwesterly path at a speed of 28-mph.

The hurricane center sent a warning stating: "Sandy moving quickly toward southern New Jersey and Delaware...Landfall expected early this evening accompanied by life-threatening storm surge and hurricane-force winds..."

At around 4 pm ET, Hurricane Sandy was approximately 50 miles southeast of Cape May, N.J. where wind speeds have reached around 90-mph.

New York is bracing for a hard impact as Hurricane Sandy nears.

At a press conference on Sunday, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg issued an evacuation notice saying "The measures are aimed at keeping residents safe and not endangering the lives of emergency services personnel."

Low-lying areas for Zone A evacuations show the Rockaways, Hamilton Beach and City Island affected, as they are presumed to have the greatest impact from the storm as they're prone to flooding. Areas of Lower Manhattan are also affected by the evacuations.

Schools and public transportation have been shut down in New York and other metropolitan cities along the eastern seaboard as gale force winds are reported from the Carolinas up to New England causing massive power outages and property damage worth billions of dollars.

Hurricane Sandy is currently a category 1 storm but with pressure levels seen in higher category hurricanes. The storm is expected to transform into a post-tropical cyclone and NHC is updating the status of the hurricane as it makes the transition.
