The Krim murders shocked the country from the unimaginable malice of their nanny who is slowly awaking from her coma after an attempted suicide.

On Oct. 25, Marina Krim returned to her Upper West Side apartment in New York in the evening to find both of her children dead in the bathtub at the hands of her nanny bleeding nearby.

Krim's 2-year-old son Leo and 6-year-old daughter Lulu were found stabbed and bleeding to death in the bath along with 50-year-old nanny Yoselyn Ortega nearby who failed to kill herself by slitting her own throat.

Now police say they believe Ortega started cutting herself when Krim returned home.

"We believe now that the nanny began to stab herself as the woman entered the room," said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly on Friday. "We initially thought that had already been done but now information is coming out that she did it as the mother entered the bathroom."

Marina arrived at her Manhattan home with her three-year-old daughter Nessie who was with her at the time of the attack, according to the New York Post. The mom of three returned to her home after Ortega and the two children were missing from meeting Marina and Nessie at a nearby pool.

Ortega, originally from the Dominican Republic, is in police custody after her failed suicide attempt. She was found with her throat and wrists cut in the bathroom with a kitchen knife nearby. The nanny was brought to New York-Cornell Hospital where she was in a coma breathing through a tube.

The nanny woke up on Sunday and asked about her family, but has yet to be interrogated by police who are still trying to find her motive.

Neighbors within the Hamilton Heights building reported to police what they saw of Ortega before the murders.

"She lost a lot of weight," said neighbor Ruben Diaze. "She looked very unhealthy. It looked like she was going through some problems. She had aged a lot - like seven years in a few months."

According to the New York Times, neighbors had said Ortega had run into financial troubles even with the generous pay the Krim family had given her.

Authorities are looking into Ortega's past to try and find a reason why she committed the murders. The nanny did not live with the family and had no criminal past. Police are also looking into if Ortega sought psychiatric help before she snapped which the nanny claims she did.

"There's no history that we're aware of," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Friday. "Obviously, this investigation is ongoing."
