Simpson spoke with Teen Vogue recently about a variety of topics, including his rather brief stint on Dancing With the Stars.

The pop star was on the spring 2014 season of Dancing With the Stars where he was the fourth celeb eliminated, coming in ninth place.

'DWTS' Champ Rumer Willis Reflects On Her Journey This Season

Simpson spoke to DWTS and how he may not have been comfortable being in the "celebrity" type of role.

"You never know what you truly want when you're 15. Also, Dancing with the Stars-what the hell?" he said. "I need to just step out of that celebrity role, you know what I mean?"

The 18-year-old singer reflected on his career so far and how he felt like he wasn't being heard in regard to what he wanted to do.

"These past two years, I was so frustrated because I felt like I wasn't being believed in," Simpson explained. "I needed to go out and do this myself-the way I want to be doing it."

Dancing With the Stars isn't always a positive experience for celebs, particularly those who are eliminated early in the competition. But even though Simpson wasn't a big fan of the DWTS experience, it did offer greater exposure to mainstream America if only for a season.

Dancing With the Stars returns for a new season in the fall on ABC, in its regular Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT timeslot.
