Eric Holder, the head of the Justice Department, reportedly knew late in the summer that FBI agents were investigating the former CIA director's extramarital affair with Paula Broadwell, his biographer, according to reports.

However, he did not tell President Barack Obama's cabinet until Election Day. The information was kept within the walls of the Justice Department until the day of the presidential election, after which officials informed the Director of National Intelligence who urged Petraeus to resign, according to The Telegraph.

The decision not to immediately inform Congress and the White House about the investigation has raised some questions and has certain members of Congress concerned.

Some Congress members announced on Sunday that they want more details about the FBI investigation. Congress is questioning Petraeus' first involvement in the FBI investigation, whether national security was compromised and why they were not told sooner about the case, according to ClarionLedger.com.

FBI first discovered details about Broadwell and Petraues' affair when analyzing email correspondents between Broadwell and a woman she was reportedly sending harassing emails to, Jill Kelley.

It has not been confirmed by neither the Justice Department nor the FBI whether or not they willingly withheld information from the president or his cabinet about the investigation involving Petraeus, according to the Telegraph. Nevertheless, Peter King, a Republican who sits on the House intelligence committee, said the FBI had been "derelict in its duty" by not informing the White House that the country's CIA director was under investigation.

"Once the FBI realized that it was investigating the director of the CIA or the CIA director had come within its focus or its scope, I believe at that time they had an absolute obligation to tell the president," King told MSNBC.

Petraeus stepped down from his position on Friday, acknowledging his affair with Broadwell in a FBI interview. He told friends the affair began in August of 2011 after he left the army, according to ABC News.
