Paula Broadwell Home Searched, David Petraeus Affair Documents
FBI agents stormed the home of Paula Broadwell on Monday and walked out with papers linked to the ongoing FBI investigation involving her extramarital affair and disturbing emails she sent to a friend of her lover's.
Shelley Lynch, a spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Charlotte, N.C., field office, confirmed that agents walked into Broadwell's home carrying cardboard boxes and searched both floors of the property on Monday evening. The search will reveal more details regarding the extramarital affair between Broadwell, former CIA director David Petraeus, whom she wrote a biography about, and his friend Jill Kelley.
The scandal not only forced Petraeus to resign, but the investigation also has Congress and members of the White House questioning why they were not informed earlier about the whole ordeal. Congress is questioning Petraeus' first involvement in the FBI investigation, whether national security was compromised and why they were not told sooner about the case, according to ClarionLedger.com.
Eric Holder, the head of the Justice Department, reportedly knew starting this summer that FBI agents were investigating Broadwell's affair with Petraeus. However, he did not tell President Barack Obama's cabinet until Election Day. The information was kept a secret until the day of the presidential election, after which officials informed the Director of National Intelligence who urged Petraeus to resign, according to The Telegraph. Petraeus gave in his resignation on Friday.
The FBI investigation that unveiled the affair between Petraeus and Broadwell began with a complaint from Kelley, a family friend of Petraeus' who said she received harassing e-mails. The FBI traced the e-mails to Broadwell, some which warned Kelley to stay away from Petraeus.
A law enforcement official said that investigators found sensitive information on Broadwell's computer, according to Bloomberg Businessweek.
Broadwell is married and has two children and Petraeus and his wife Holly have been married for 38 years and also have two adult children.
