Something crucial about the dynamic of Alicia and Peter's relationship changed in season 7 of The Good Wife toward the end of the last chapter.

Elsbeth Set To Return In Season 7

Alicia (Julianna Margulies) lost her State's Attorney position and is even starting from scratch professionally. The road ahead is pretty tough for her, but she seems to be independent and strong now. It seems like she has no use for the putting up a pretense of a marriage with Peter (Chris Noth) going forward. Over the past seasons the couple agreed to not make their split official as they both had vested interests in staying together -- a good marriage helped Peter's political career, as did Peter's clout help Alicia professionally and later even in her run for State's Attorney. But now things have drastically changed and as Peter hoped to run for president in season 7, Alicia finally let him know that she disapproved. If she will not willfully support him from the start it seems unlikely she would do so actively as a wife.

It seems like things will fall apart for the couple in season 7 and it's high time Alicia broke the tenuous ties to be able to legitimately pursue other relationships. The fact that her flirtation with Will (Josh Charles) was made a big deal of in the public, and that she has to be very careful about her relationships, almost pursuing the clandestinely also has to stop.

Critics Unforgiving Of Controversial Season 6 Finale Scene Of The Good Wife

In fact, recent reports also suggested that Peter could forego Alicia's wishes and run for president anyway. This might just end up being the last straw for her.

Recently, CBS also finally revealed when season 7 of The Good Wife will be back on our screens.

The next chapter of the legal drama is set to premiere on CBS on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 9 p.m. The stage for the next phase of Alicia's career is set to drastically change.
