Channing Tatum has been named People's "2012 Sexiest Man Alive."

The model-turned-actor landed the honor for his stunning looks, chiseled body and perhaps for playing the leader who bared it all in one of this year's hit films "Magic Mike."

Despite the success of portraying a stripper in a semi-autobiographical tale, Tatum was still shocked and humbled by the honor.

"My first thought was, 'Y'all are messing with me,' " said Tatum.

The first person he shared the good news with was his wife, actress Jenna Dewan-Tatum, 31, whom he married in 2009.

"I told Jenna after we'd been in the bathtub washing our dogs because they'd gotten skunked. She was like, 'What?' " he said. "Yeah, she calls me [the Sexiest Man Alive] now."

The Alabama native told People that he and his wife can't wait to start their family.

"I'm ready; I think she's ready," said the 32-year-old. "The first number that pops into my head is three, but I just want one to be healthy and then we'll see where we go after that."

"It's really easy for us guys to say, 'I want like 15 kids,' " he explained. "Jenna will be like, 'Well you better get another wife!' "

When asked about his admired physical stature, he explained he has to work hard to maintain his physique.

"I like to be lean. If I get too bulky I can't move well and I like to move," he said. "When I'm not training, I get really round and soft."

His wife told the magazine that Tatum offers more than good looks and a great body. She explained how well-rounded he is, saying the following: "People know him to be fun and sexy, but they don't know how emotionally deep and spiritually open he is. He is such an open-hearted person; what you see is what you get."

The rest of the issue features more than 180 male stars in several categories including "25 Sexiest Chests To Be Thankful For," "Hollywood's Sexiest Family Guys" and "Sexiest Athletes On The Field-And About Town."

Other honorees include Blake Shelton, Ben Affleck, Chris Hemsworth, "New Girl" star Max Greenfield and Tatum's "Magic Mike" co-star Matt Bomer, to name a few. Tatum also happens to be GQ's "Movie Star of the Year" for their "2012 Men Of The Year" Issue. Tatum told GQ about the advice he has received from veterans in Hollywood:

"They were like: 'Grind it. If you love it, grind it.' I did. And a lot of people who didn't grind it, it's not that they're not in a good place, but I'm in a better place."

The GQ issue features pop star Rihanna on the cover wearing nothing but a cropped leather jacket. People magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive Issue" arrives on newsstands Friday, Nov. 16.
