The 40th Anniversary American Music Awards aired live on Sunday, Nov. 18 from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

Usher opened the show performing his hit song "Numb" and Ryan Seacrest hosted the night, giving the first award to Justin Bieber for Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist. He was nominated alongside Flo Rida, Pitbull, and Usher, and his win marked his fifth American Music Award victory.

For the sixth year in a row, fans chose the winners by voting online at www.AMA.ABC.com. Performers of the night included Christina Aguilera, Linkin Park, Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen. Chris Brown, Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj, No Doubt, Pitbull, Pink, Taylor Swift, The Wanted, Carrie Underwood and Stevie Wonder.

Presenters included Randy Jackson, Stacy Keibler, Ne-Yo, Cyndi Lauper, Karmin, Kerry Washington, Heidi Klum, Will.i.am and the Backstreet Boys.

Jackson introduced Kelly Clarkson, who performed a medley of her songs "Miss Independent," "Since U Been Gone," "Stronger" and "Catch My Breath." She started off the number as if she was a contestant on "American Idol," performing in front of a panel of judges, and then broke out to perform songs from her new "Greatest Hits" album, which will be released on Monday.

Later on in the evening, Ke$ha did a tribal-like performance of "Die Young" and Swift performed "I Knew You Were Trouble." Swift, whose new album "Red" is in stores now, will perform on "New Year's Rockin Eve" in Times Square, N.Y. She sold 1.2 million copies of her new album in its first week alone and the tour for "Red" begins in March, covering 45 cities and 29 states. Swift won a total of 11 American Music Awards in her career including the one she won on Sunday.

Usher won Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist four times in his career, three years in a row, and Minaj now has a total of four American Music Awards. She won on Sunday the award for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album, which she also won last year. Luke Bryan won his first American Music Award on Sunday night and once lovers Rihanna and Chris Brown went head-to-head in the category of Favorite Soul/R&B Album. Rihanna performed with Bieber on Nov. 7 at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show and the two artists competed against each other on Sunday for the coveted Artist of the Year award.
