ABC aired the 40th Anniversary American Music Awards live on Sunday, Nov. 18, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

Fresh off his breakup with Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber performed an acoustic version of "As Long As You Love Me" followed by his new hit "Beauty and a Beat" with Nicki Minaj. He won three awards on Sunday, giving him a total of seven American Music wins throughout his career.

Kelly Clarkson performed a medley of some of her greatest hits and Linkin Park took to the stage after winning an award for themselves on Sunday. Up for two awards on Sunday, Chris Brown performed with Swizz Beatz and Ludacris "Everyday Birthday" in recognition of the 40th anniversary of the American Music Awards.

Gloria Estefan introduced Christian Aguilera who performed hits from her new album "Lotus." The singer, mother and "The Voice" mentor recently announced that she was going to take time off from the reality show to focus on her music career. Following her performance on Sunday, Pitbull took to the stage and got the crowd wild with "Don't Stop The Party." Pitbull was nominated in the Favorite Latin Artist category alongside Don Omar and Shakira, who will be taking Aguilera's spot as mentor on the new season of "The Voice."

Performers of the night included Usher, Carly Rae Jepsen, Ke$ha, No Doubt, Pink, Taylor Swift, The Wanted, Carrie Underwood and Stevie Wonder, who performed a tribute number to Dick Clark.

Before he sang, Wonder said the following: "I remember when I was 13 years old meeting [Dick Clark] in Philadelphia for the first time... I remember his love for music and his love for people. I challenge you as communicators, leaders, politicans...put ur love first as we musicians put our music first."

As he performed, a slideshow went on in the background screen showing photos of Clark with his wife, Wonder, Lionel Richie and others.

A new category at the American Music Awards was Favorite Electronic Dance Music (EDM) Artist. David Guetta, Calvin Harris and Skrillex competed for the coveted award.

Live coverage of the red carpet event began at 5 p.m. Eastern Time Sunday and viewers can watch videos of show on the official site for the 2012 American Music Awards.
