The American Music Awards on Nov. 18 paid tribute to Dick Clark with a special performance by his longtime friend Stevie Wonder.

Before Ryan Seacrest introduced the singer, he said the show still reflects Clark's vision of bringing the year's most popular artists together on one night and to "let the music speak for itself."

Clark created the American Music Awards 40 years ago.

Wonder than said a few hours to the audience, which included Clark's widow.

"I remember his friendship and his kindness. I remember his love for music and his love for people," Wonder said. "I challenge you, you as communicators, leaders, politicians, spiritual leaders: Put your love first like we musicians put our music first... Then we can be jamming until the break of dawn."

Wonder played a medley of songs as a slideshow of photos of Clark with his wife and other musicians flashed across the background screen.

The night ended with the Artist of the Year award given to pop star Justin Bieber and a special "Gangnam Style" performance by PSY featuring MC Hammer. PSY started the performance with his original song and dance, and then MC Hammer came on stage and joined in with a "Stop, Hammer time" add-in. The two performers began doing moves from Hammer's "U Can't Touch This" video and then ended the performance with the "Gangnam" dance. The dance collaboration is not one to be forgotten and both singers wore iconic 1990s Hammer pants.

Usher opened the show performing "Numb" and afterwards Seacrest gave the first award of the night to Justin Bieber for Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist. He was nominated alongside Flo Rida, Pitbull, and Usher, and the respective win marked his fifth American Music Award victory. However, he won three awards on Sunday night so he has a total of seven AMA wins.

Bieber performed an acoustic version of "As Long As You Love Me" followed by his new hit "Beauty and a Beat" with Nicki Minaj. The rapper beat Drake and J. Cole for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album and also took home the award for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop artist. She was the only female nominated in both categories. Minaj now has a total of three American Music Awards. She also won last year's Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album award.

Performers of the night included Christina Aguilera, Linkin Park, Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen. Chris Brown, Ke$ha, Minaj, No Doubt, Pitbull, Pink, Taylor Swift, The Wanted and Carrie Underwood.
