Once Upon a Time co-creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz spoke with the publication about Emma now being shrouded in darkness and the exploration of her inner conflict in season 5.

'Once Upon a Time' Season 5 Premiere Title Addresses Emma's Darkness

"Every part of her is fighting her dark urges," Kitsis said. "What happens when [the darkness] mixes with the lightest magic of all, and will Emma have the strength to fight it?"

Emma's darkness will be different from Rumplestiltskin's (Robert Carlyle).

"How a Dark One manifests is specific to each person who takes on the mantle," Horowitz added. "Emma will have her own unique spin on what it means to be a Dark One."

Kitsis explained how being the Dark One "allows you to have the freedom to have no inhibitions," adding, "We are going to be exploring love and what happens when you use it as a weapon and what are the things that it makes you do. In the past, we've said love is the most powerful magic of all. It makes you do many things you normally wouldn't think you would."

Once Upon a Time fans last saw Emma sacrificing herself to the darkness in the season 4 finale and disappearing, with only the dagger left behind. The series will pick up right where it left off.

Now with Dark Emma on the loose, "the quest for Merlin is the quest to free Emma," as Kitsis explained.

Once Upon a Time season 5 is set to premiere on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
