Henry Cavill is very insistent that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will not be a Superman sequel.

'Batman vs Superman' Synopsis Teases The 'War' To Come

Cavill, who plays Superman/Clark Kent in the DC Cinematic Universe, recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly to discuss how the film is actually an expansion of the story rather than a direct sequel.

"As far as the individual character is concerned, this is not a Superman sequel," Cavill explained. "It's more of an introduction to Batman, an opening to Justice League, and an expansion of the world that was created in Man of Steel."

Ben Affleck Describes The Dark Knight As Being 'On The Verge' In 'Batman vs Superman'

This is the first time Superman and Batman (Ben Affleck) will be present in the same (live action) movie on the big screen. The film will also introduce Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and more.

Cavill asserted that fans should rest assured that there will be more strictly Superman sequels in the future.

"There's plenty of time for individual Superman sequels," he said. "He's a tough character to tell. People like the darker vigilante. I think it speaks to the human psyche more easily rather than the god-like being that we can't really understand. Once we have a more expansive universe we can delve more into the character of Superman and hopefully tell more stories."

DC has a huge lineup planned already, starting with Batman v Superman and concluding with Cyborg. It remains to be seen if there will be an individual Man of Steel sequel in between or if it's being saved for another phase.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is scheduled for release in theaters on March 25, 2016.
