Here's everything we know so far about Avatar 2 ahead of its 2017 release.

James Cameron Promises 'Your Mouth Wide Open' After Watching The 'Avatar' Sequels

Avatar 2 is slated to be released in theaters on Christmas Day 2017 and while there are still two and a half years to go, director James Cameron is already hard at work.

The sequel to the massively successful Avatar will include the return of Zoe Saldana as Neytiri, Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, as well as Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver. Lang and Weaver's characters died in the first film, so it remains to be seen how they will be incorporated in the sequel.

'Avatar 2' Looking To Use New Technology That Will Surpass 'The Hobbit' Films

But ultimately the real star of Avatar was the technology. While the first Avatar was state of the art, the sequel is said to feature a higher frame rate than the standard 24-frames-per-second. There is also some speculation that the sequel will take place in the oceanic ecosystem of Pandora.

Cameron talked about the storyline of the sequel (as well as the planned third film) back in 2011 to The Hollywood Reporter (via Reelz).

"In the second and third films, which will be self-contained stories that also fulfill a greater story arc, we will not back off the throttle of 'Avatar's' visual and emotional horsepower, and will continue to explore its themes and characters, which touched the hearts of audiences in all cultures around the world," he said. "I'm looking forward to returning to Pandora, a world where our imaginations can run wild."

Meanwhile, Cameron and the rest of the cast and crew of Avatar are mourning the loss of James Horner, who composed the music for the original film.

"It's sad and shocking, and it's such a waste in a way," Cameron told People. "There's so much music he could have done, and we were looking forward to our next gig together . . . I think he's up there with John Williams and Hans Zimmer, firmly implanted at the top of the firmament of the current great masters."
