An alien apocalypse can bring out the best and the worst in a person. For four seasons, TNT showcased the loyal, caring, and fiercely protective side of Tom Mason (Noah Wyle) for four years, but as season 5 begain, the leader of 2nd Mass took a dark and violent turn.

Unfortunately for Ben (Connor Jessup), the former professor will be willing to put his middle son in mortal peril if, in his mind, the benefits outweigh the risks.

"As we get towards the end of the series, there definitely becomes for Ben this position where we're building towards the obvious climax and he has the ability to get information and stuff that other characters can't - but obviously at personal cost to himself and personal danger," Jessup told Enstarz at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday. "This is the kind of stuff where, in the past, Tom would have been like, 'You can't do that. It's not worth risking you life.' Now it's totally flipped; he's the one pushing for it. So he kind of pulls me along.

It was clear Tom had flipped a switch when he encountered an Espheni during the season premiere, and "Hatchlings" will see Wyle violently interrogate an overlord, the effects of which will be keenly felt by his spiked offspring.

"It's a dynamic we've never had before," Jessup warned.
