Laverne Cox landing her role on Netflix's Orange Is the New Black actually led to the actress being able to keep her apartment.

Cox, who plays Sophia Burset on Orange Is the New Black, has gone on to wide acclaim as the most famous transgender actress in the world. But it wasn't always so great for her before getting the role.

"When I was booked for the job [in late 2012], I was in rent arrears," Cox explained recently, via The Mirror. "I'd got an eviction notice earlier that year and had to go to housing court for the second time in my life to keep from being evicted from my apartment. I was basically nine months behind on rent."

But nabbing the role of Sophia allowed Cox to pay off her rent and the rest is history.

In addition to becoming a transgender icon, Cox has received a lot of awards success as well. The actress was nominated for an Emmy last year in the Guest Actress in a Comedy Series category, the first openly transgender person to be nominated in an acting category. She ultimately lost to her co-star Uzo Aduba (who plays Suzanne).

However, earlier this year Cox took home a SAG Award when Orange Is the New Black won the award for Best Comedy Ensemble.

Thursday is the announcement of the Emmy nominations for the 2014-15 TV season, so we will see if Cox earns a second consecutive nomination.

Meanwhile, all three seasons of Orange Is the New Black are available to stream on Netflix.
