Game of Thrones is the big story coming out of the Emmy nominations, with 24 nominations in total. The fantasy series received a fifth consecutive nomination for Best Drama Series as well as acting nominations for Peter Dinklage (Tyrion), Emilia Clarke (Daenerys), Lena Headey (Cersei) and Diana Rigg (Lady Olenna).

Fellow Best Drama Series nominees, Netflix's House of Cards and AMC's Mad Men, have 11 nominations each.

Netflix's Orange Is the New Black was forced to compete as a drama and it's safe to say the move did not benefit it. It went from 12 nominations last year in the comedy categories to only four this year. However, it did pick up a nomination for Best Drama Series and acting nominations for Uzo Aduba (Suzanne) and Pablo Schreiber (Pornstache).

Other nominations in Best Drama Series were AMC's Better Call Saul, PBS's Downton Abbey and Showtime's Homeland.

Over on the comedy side, Amazon's Transparent was the genre leader with 11 nominations. In addition to a nomination for Best Comedy Series, it received acting nominations for Jeffrey Tambor (Maura), Gaby Hoffmann (Ali) and Bradley Whitford (Mark/Marcy).

One notable surprise was the Best Comedy Series nomination for NBC's Parks and Recreation, which hadn't been nominated in that category since 2011.

The other nominees for Best Comedy Series were FX's Louie, ABC's Modern Family, HBO's Silicon Valley, Netflix's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and HBO's Veep.

The Big Bang Theory was surprisingly snubbed after being nominated four years in a row. But even more surprising was the omission of star Jim Parsons, who has won four Emmys for his performance as Sheldon Cooper.

Another big snub was Julianna Margulies of CBS's The Good Wife, who won Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series last year.
