Agents of SHIELD's Grant Ward will look to even out Director Coulson's mistakes as season 3 begins.

All of SHIELD's characters have gone through amazing growth in the last two years, but Ward's (Brett Dalton) journey has been by far the most shocking. As season 2 came to a close, Ward made the biggest leap of all, abandoning his personal vendettas to become the next head of Hydra.

When Ward returns this fall, he will use his new position to become Coulson's (Clark Gregg) opposite.

"I think Coulson's made a lot of mistakes, he's got it wrong in a lot of ways. Every yin needs its yang," Dalton told IGN at San Diego Comic-Con. "So we see someone who is interested in closure, and getting it the right way. That's what we see in season 3."

As for why Ward decided to take up Hydra's call, Dalton assures viewers it is not because he's suddenly become a supporter of their Nazi ways. SHIELD simply left an opening that needed to be filled.

"I think that Hydra doesn't have a sense of leadership at this point. We've had the Hydra with Strucker, we've had the Hydra with Whitehall - all of these other versions of Hydra - and, you know, it's a ship in need of captaining," Dalton informed Zap2It. "Ward has elected himself, and he's a hero in that story."

Catch up with Ward when Agents of SHIELD returns to ABC this September.
