Katic, who plays Kate Beckett on the ABC crime procedural, spoke with Deadline about her presence on the show and previewed the upcoming eighth season.

The actress said that something will go down in the first part of season 8 that will kick things "into a higher velocity" and "is part of what will set everything up for the next 20 episodes."

The new season will delve into Beckett and Castle's (Nathan Fillion) relationship and the major events that led them to this point in their lives.

"Part of the exciting thing about this season is the way [new showrunners Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter] have envisioned the cosmic version of why [Rick and Kate] have come together," she said. "It delves into the mythology of Rick's disappearance and memory loss as well as into what inspired Beckett to become a cop in the first place."

Speaking on her last-minute contract renewal at the end of season 7, Katic revealed that she wasn't exactly holding out due to extended contract negotiations, it was just a busy time for her.

"For me it wasn't necessarily down to the wire," she noted. "I didn't really start speaking about that until after we had wrapped the (7th) season. A lot of the discussions were happening while I was filming The Rendezvous, so I let my reps handle. It went rather quickly in the end."

Castle season 8 is set to premiere Monday, Sept. 21 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
