Anna Wintour Apologizes For 2024 Met Gala Theme ‘Confusion:’ The 'Exhibition Broke My Cardinal Rule'
Fashion mogul Anna Wintour has chaired the annual Met Gala since 1995; however, this year, the featured theme broke her "cardinal rule."
The 'Vogue' magazine editor-in-chief admitted that the dress code she and Metropolitan Museum of Art's costume curator Andrew Bolton deliberated about didn't quite hit the target.
The exhibit's theme was 'Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion' with a dress code reflecting 'The Garden of Time' — which Wintour admits may have opened the door for "many, many things."
"This exhibition broke my cardinal rule," Wintour, 74, explained at on the 'Today' show.
"When we came up with the title 'Sleeping Beauties,' it's wonderful and poetic and romantic...but actually, it could be many, many things.
"I said, 'What are we gonna say to people to wear to this night?' And he said, 'Well, what about 'Garden of Time?' " Wintour revealed. "So, I fear that we've unleashed a lot of confusion out there, and for which I deeply apologize."
Wintour, who is no stranger to style forecasting, predicted that the lack of specificity could result in an explosion of flowers, and based on the outcome — she wasn't wrong.
"I imagine we'll see a lot of flowers," she said, kindly laughing that she could "possibly" be seen in petals as well.
The style icon wore a floor-length blazer featuring an applique of spring flowers made by Loewe, draped over a white floor length dress complete with a lavish chunky necklace.
While the global editorial director was looking forward to flowers, she listed three food items she banned from the menu: garlic, chives, and onions. "Those are three things I'm not particularly fond of," the director told Jenna Bush Hager on 'Today.'
Chef and owner at Great Taste Catering in Los Angeles, Josh Jackson, alluded to the possibility that she doesn't want smelly foods to affect celebs at the event, and that attendees may be allergic to them.
"But that's maybe a stretch," Jackson explained. "The real reason must be she doesn't want to see chives in the guests' teeth. It's understandable."
