  • The 88th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), will honor the best films of 2015 and will take place on February 28, 2016, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California. The ceremony will be televised in the United States by ABC, and will be produced by David Hill and Reginald Hudlin. Actor Chris Rock will host the show for the second time, having previously hosted the 77th ceremony held in 2005.

The nominees for the 88th Academy Awards were announced on January 14, 2016 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California, by directors Guillermo Del Toro and Ang Lee, Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs, and actor John Krasinski.

Leonardo DiCaprio has earned his fifth Academy Award nomination, for playing fur trapper Hugh Glass and he's worked hard to put himself in the Oscar conversation.

The "Revenant" star famously ate a raw bison liver (which, he said, did NOT taste like chicken), waded through icy water and came down with the flu several times while portraying Hugh Glass, the vengeful 19th-century trapper, in the wilderness epic.

For his efforts (including some acting), he's considered the front-runner for best actor.
  • This is the second Academy Award nomination for Eddie Redmayne. Redmayne portrays the transgender pioneer Lili Elbe from the movie "The Danish Girl", a casting that has been subject of some controversy from the transgender community. However, Redmayne's performance has been met with critical acclaim, with some critics labelling him as a frontrunner to win the Academy Award for Best Actor.
  • This is the fourth Academy Award nomination for Matt Damon. He played the main character, astronaut Mark Watney, in Ridley Scott's "The Martian", based on Andy Weir's best-selling novel of the same name, a role that earned him the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.
  • This is the second Academy Award nomination for Michael Fassbender. He played late Apple founder and CEO Steve Jobs in the Danny Boyle-directed film "Steve Jobs", which premiered in September of 2015.

He was previously nominated for his Supporting Role in the 2013 movie "12 Years A Slave."
  • This is the first Academy Award nomination for Bryan Cranston. Cranston starred as screenwriter Dalton Trumbo whose talent places him among the elite of Hollywood in the biopic 2015 film "Trumbo", which he earned and received his first nomination.
  • This is JLaw's fourth Academy Award nomination. She plays Joy, a single mother with a conflicted extended family, whose determination to better her life prompts her to invent the Miracle Mop.
  • This is the second Academy Award nomination for Saoirse Ronan. She plays Eilis, a young woman who finds love after immigrating to America, although her relationship and feelings for her new country are tested when she returns to Ireland.
  • This is the seventh Academy Award nomination for Cate Blanchett. She now plays Carol Aird in the movie "Carol", a sophisticated housewife who is threatened with losing custody of her daughter because of her relationship with another woman.
  • This is the first Academy Award nomination for Brie Larson. She portrays Ma in the movie "Room", a woman held captive in a small shed for seven years, who strives to create a normal life for her young son.
  • This is her first Academy Award nomination. As Kate Mercer, Rampling plays a woman whose plans for a party to celebrate her 45th wedding anniversary are disrupted by unsettling news.
