In January 2000, Chris Klein and actress Katie Holmes began dating. The couple became engaged around Christmas of 2003. The couple called off the engagement and ended their relationship in March 2005.
In a candid new interview with People magazine, Klein says, “We found comfort in one another… We had a similar upbringing and we were going through the same experience (in Hollywood). As the teenage craze came to an end, we found that our relationship was changing as well.
“From my side there was a lot of denial and fear about the future. It ended as amicably as these things can end.” Klein adds, “When we were breaking up, we kept it to ourselves for a while. It looked like it was Katie and Chris together and two seconds later Katie and Tom together, but that’s ridiculously compressed… Kate was incredibly respectful about the decision she was making to move on (with Cruise).
“She called and said, ‘Listen I want you to know before you see it anywhere else.'”
Klein and Holmes have remained friends of varying degree since the breakup.
