  • What many people did not know is that Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin's relationship was a real-life Romeo and Juliet kind of love story from the start.

Despite their marriage spanning a decade, the lovely couple has announced their split in 2014. But how did these two met and where? You wonder how the small town UK boy landed a Hollywood film star - well, it's not that complicated.

After more than 10 years together, we take a look back at the then-couple's romance and how it started.
  • Unlike Gwyneth, 43, Chris, 37, came from very humble beginnings, growing up in Devon, and later studying Ancient World Studies in London, before rising to fame in a band named Coldplay.
  • The actress, on the other hand, is the daughter of actress Blythe Danner and the late film producer and director Bruce Paltrow. She grew up in Los Angeles, which couldn't be further from Chris' home in southern England.

Like most showbiz couples, a tabloid rumor actually started this lovely romance.
  • In 2002, rumors circulated that the pair were going out before they actually met each other.

In fact, Gwyneth told The Sun: "It’s funny because people had started writing that we were going out and we had never even met."
  • It was the singer's winning charm and humor that eventually won him the stunning Hollywood star.

The blonde beauty added: "He was in Los Angeles doing a concert and an actress that he had a crush on was supposed to come to the concert.
  • "When she didn’t show up, he was so annoyed that he said, 'Oh, this is for my girlfriend Gwyneth Paltrow'."

Understandably, the rumor went into overdrive despite the pair never having spoken to each other. But the two eventually met at another concert.
  • Chris' assistant reportedly approached the actress and asked her to meet him backstage - where no doubt their eyes met across a crowded room and they fell instantly in love.
  • It came just three weeks after Gwyneth's dad Bruce died suddenly in October 2002 from a heart attack, after a long battle with throat cancer.

The then-couple had reportedly been touring Italy together to mark the actress' 30th birthday, when her dad collapsed in Tuscany. He was flown to a hospital in Rome but died shortly after.

Gwyneth was devastated and told New magazine: "It was devastating beyond belief and I am still very traumatized at the memory."

While she was clearly still struggling to cope with her dad's death, her romance with Chris undoubtedly helped her cope up. We really knew the two were in love when Gwyneth's mum Blyth announced Chris had written the famous Coldplay song "Fix You" for Gwyneth after Bruce's death.

The surprisingly private pair's relationship then became a bit of a whirlwind.

After being spotted together at public events, but rarely talking about their relationship, the two got secretly married just a year later in California.

In Christmas of 2003, Gwyneth had announced she was pregnant that same month too!
  • It's never easy when a couple live in two separate countries - but Chris and Gwyneth managed to split their time well between UK and US for the first few months.

But with Apple on the way, Gwyn made the brave decision to leave her family and move in with Chris in London in 2004.

Less than two years later, the pair announced Gwyneth was pregnant with her second baby Moses, and although they made several trips to America, the family made their home in London.

The couple kept their romance very private unlike many other celebrity couples, and Chris explained why in 2008.

"I never talk about my wife," Chris told the Telegraph. "We're both in public professions but we try to keep our private life private."

While in marriages, it's not always a day full of sunshine, the first signs of trouble for the couple came at the start of this year when rumours circulated online the actress had cheated on Chris with entertainment lawyer Kevin Yorn.

In 2013, Vanity Fair was reported to be ready to run a story about an alleged affair about Gwyneth and supermodel Elle Macpherson's husband Jeff Soffer. The piece was never published as Gwyneth's camp cleared out the rumor.

Despite the clear up, Gwyneth and Chris decided to separate, yet continue to co-parent their two children together.
