'Hacksaw Ridge' Cast: Andrew Garfield, Vince Vaughn, Sam Worthington & More

The film is based on the true story about US Army medic, awarded the Medal of Honor by President Harry S. Truman.

  • 'Hacksaw Ridge' is an upcoming American war drama film directed by Mel Gibson and written by Gregory Crosby, Robert Schenkkan, and Randall Wallace. The film stars Andrew Garfield, Vince Vaughn, Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Hugo Weaving, Ryan Corr, Teresa Palmer, Richard Pyros and Rachel Griffiths. Principal photography began on September 5, 2015 in New South Wales.

    Plot: The film is based on the true story about US Army medic Desmond T. Doss, a conscientious objector who refused to bear arms, yet was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Harry S. Truman for single-handedly saving the lives of over 75 of his comrades while under constant enemy fire during the brutal Battle of Okinawa in World War II.

    Doss was the first conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor and one of only three so honored (the others are Thomas W. Bennett and Joseph G. LaPointe, Jr.). He was a Corporal (Private First Class at the time of his Medal of Honor heroics) in the U.S. Army assigned to the Medical Detachment, 307th Infantry, 77th Infantry Division.
  • Teresa Palmer as Dorothy Schutte.

    Palmer was seen in The Grudge 2 in 2006, in December Boys and in the 2008 children's fantasy Bedtime Stories. She appeared in The Sorcerer's Apprentice in 2010 and her films in 2011 include her role as Number Six in the sci-fi film I Am Number Four and playing the love interest in Take Me Home Tonight. In 2013, she starred in the zombie love story, Warm Bodies and the romantic war film, Love and Honor, and in the 2015 remake of Point Break.
  • Sam Worthington was also set to join the cast as Captain Glover.

    Worthington is best known for his portrayals of main character Jake Sully in the highest-grossing film of all time, Avatar; Marcus Wright in Terminator Salvation; Perseus in Clash of the Titans and its sequel, Wrath of the Titans; and Alex Mason in the video game Call of Duty: Black Ops and its sequel Call of Duty: Black Ops II.
  • On July 2015, Vince Vaughn was added to the cast, in which Vaughn would play Sgt. Howell, a non-commissioned officer from Alabama appoints to make sure the soldiers are ready.
  • Hugo Weaving joined the film to play Tom Doss, father of Desmond T. Doss.

    Weaving is best known for his roles as Agent Smith in The Matrix trilogy (1999–2003) and Elrond in The Lord of the Rings (2001–2003) and The Hobbit (2012–2014) film trilogies, as well as the title role of V in the 2006 film V for Vendetta.

    Roxburgh appeared as henchman Hugh Stamp in the John Woo-directed Mission: Impossible II, which was filmed in Sydney. Also filmed in Sydney was Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge! (2001), in which Roxburgh played the Duke of Monroth. He also appeared as three iconic characters over the next three years: he played Sherlock Holmes in 2002's The Hound of the Baskervilles, Holmes's nemesis Professor Moriarty in 2003's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and Count Dracula in 2004's Van Helsing.
  • Luke Bracey as Smitty.

    Bracey also played Cobra Commander in G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013), replacing Joseph Gordon-Levitt from the first film, and starred in lead roles in the 2014 films The November Man and The Best of Me, the latter based on a novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks. In 2015, he starred as FBI Agent Johnny Utah in Point Break, a remake of the 1991 film.
  • Ryan Corr also signed on to play the role of Lt. Manville.

    Corr is known for his roles in the Australian drama series Packed to the Rafters and Love Child along with film roles in Wolf Creek 2, The Water Diviner and Holding the Man.
  • Rachel Griffiths as Bertha Doss.

    Griffiths came to prominence with the 1994 film Muriel's Wedding and her Academy Award nominated performance in Hilary and Jackie (1998). She is best known for her portrayals of Brenda Chenowith in the HBO series Six Feet Under and Sarah Walker Laurent on the ABC primetime drama Brothers & Sisters. Her work in film and television has earned her a Golden Globe Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards and three Australian Film Institute Awards.
