Comedian Janeane Garofalo said she had no idea she was married for two decades, until her unassuming husband made final arrangements to walk down the aisle with someone else, The Daily Mail reported.

The 48-year-old stand-up comedian, actress, liberal political activist and writer confessed that in 1991 she married her then boyfriend of one year, Rob Cohen, "as a joke." Garofalo didn't think the nuptials had actually stuck and had no idea of it.

The actress told The New York Post, "We got married drunk in Vegas ... We dated for a year, and we got married at a drive-through in a cab."

"[We thought] you have to go down to the courthouse and sign papers and stuff, so who knew?" Garofalo explained.

At "The Ben Stiller Show" on Saturday, the comedian added that she and Cohen "got married, for real, which we had to have a notary dissolve not 30 minutes before we got here tonight. We were married for 20 years until this evening."

"We were married, and apparently now that [Rob] is getting married for real, his lawyer dug up something," Garofalo continued.

Cohen, who produced "The Big Bang Theory" and was also a writer for "The Ben Stiller Show," is now truly engaged to Jill Leiderman, a producer on "Jimmy Kimmel Live." Garofalo and Cohen refer to their marriage as simply a 20-year-long joke," according to The Mail. Now officially divorced, Cohen joked, "I'm gonna get all that 'Reality Bites' money!"

He was referring to Garofalo's role in the 1994 Ethan Hawke-Winona Ryder film, which grossed $21 million, The Mail confirmed. After starring in "Reality Bites," Garofalo landed a leading role along with Uma Thurman in "The Truth About Cats & Dogs."
