On Friday, the two retailers confirmed that while they would continue to sell the popular women's magazine, they would begin shielding its covers with blinders due to its sexual content.

Rite Aid spokeswoman Kristin Kellum said stores would “continue to carry” Cosmopolitan Magazine, but was “working to place future issues of this publication behind pocket shields,” the New York Times reported Saturday.

"Food Lion, which runs 1,100 grocery stores in the Southeast and mid-Atlantic, will require Cosmopolitan’s publisher, Hearst, to provide a holder that would shield the cover," according to Christy Phillips-Brown, spokeswoman for the grocery chain.

The cover shield requested by Food Lion won't hide the entire cover, but rather the outside of the magazine, which is where the racy headlines, including titles such as “Sex So Hot You’ll Need to Crank the A.C.!” and “Oh My Goddess! The Sex Move He Will Worship You For,” are shared. Meanwhile, the magazine's banner and cover model will still be seen.

Despite the retailers' requests, Cosmopolitan Magazine said in a statement they were “proud of all that the brand has achieved for women around the world,” highlighting topics including "health, relationships, careers, politics and gender equality."

There are about 4,600 Rite Aid stores around the country, while Food Lion operates about 1,100 grocery stores.
