Dancing With the Stars pro Witney Carson recently admitted that she sometimes has "insomnia" during seasons of the show.
Carson, who won Dancing With the Stars last fall with Alfonso Ribeiro, recently spoke with Fashion & Style where she talked about her process and why she thinks the samba is the hardest dance.
"During the season I have insomnia a lot," Carson said. "I am constantly thinking about the dance. I am completely focused on the celebrity and the dances we need to complete. We have to come up with all the choreography all the costumes, the camera angles the lighting ... anything that will make a difference in our routine is up to us."
Carson first started as a pro on Dancing With the Stars in season 18, partnered with Cody Simpson. The pair placed ninth. Then in season 19, her second season with the show, she won the Mirrorball trophy with Ribeiro. Then in the recent 20th season, she was partnered with Chris Soules. They placed fifth.
The dancer said that the samba is the most difficult dance to perform because of its technique.
"It's got to be the samba. It is the hardest dance and all the celebs and pros say the same thing," she said. "We avoid it because the technique is difficult. It's all about the bounce. There are so many things that are difficult if you're not trained in it from when you're little. It's very hard to grasp."
And ultimately, while the pros like to make things competitive between them, it is all in good fun, according to Carson.
"We are so supportive of each other. We are not competitive at all, we help each other out. It's kind of fun at the end of the season when it gets competitive a bit, but it's all respectful and in fun. It's healthy competition at the end of the day," she said.
Carson is expected to return this fall for season 21.
Dancing With the Stars returns for a new season on Monday, Sept. 14 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
