Beckett (Stana Katic) made a bold, series-shifting decision in last night's episode of ABC's Castle, leaving fans devastated.

In the final moments of Monday night's episode of Castle, Beckett broke up with Castle (Nathan Fillion). She rediscovered her passion for needing to identify Bracken's (Jack Coleman) partner, and after some advisement from Castle's stepmother Rita, realized she would be putting Castle in grave danger if she continued down the rabbit hole.

New Castle showrunners Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter defended their choice to split up Beckett and Castle in a new interview with TVLine.

Hawley said that this storytelling choice was used to "put the spark back in, and the stakes back in, which give us the fun and the juice."

"There are things we've been able to do in the following episodes that we would not be able to even broach, now that we've created this new paradigm in their relationship," Winter added. "And it's created some really fantastic results. We're really excited about what were able to give Nathan and Stana to play. It was a bold choice, it was a tough choice, but I can say this - and I speak for both of us: The characters of Castle and Beckett both mean a lot to us, and their relationship means the world to us as well. So we have a real plan for how to guide through this new path, and we really do believe it's going to be something that will be satisfying overall. If people give us a chance, they're going to really - hopefully - appreciate the journey that we're going on."

The show runners also asserted that the tone will still be "fun" in the episodes going forward, with the dynamic continuing to "evolve."

Meanwhile, many Castle fans are furious with the decision to break up "Caskett." Is this a "jump the shark" moment for you? Will you continue watching? Take our poll below.
