Now that Beckett has been promoted to captain of the precinct, Castle will have to fall back on his private investigating skills.

Fillion spoke with Entertainment Weekly in a new interview and revealed how Beckett's new position changes things.

Rick & Kate's Relationship Will Have Some 'Added Drama' In 'Castle' Next Season

"Beckett's change in career won't allow Castle that kind of access he's been accustomed to in previous seasons," Fillion teased. "To get his murder-solving fix, he has to lean more heavily on his private-investigation career."

New show runners Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter also spoke with Entertainment Weekly and revealed how the Castle-Beckett relationship would continue to evolve.

"What made the audience respond to these two people so strongly at the beginning is that spark between them, and I think we need to infuse the show with a little bit more of that," Hawley noted. "So there will be conflict, there will be tears, there will be laughs, there will be everything in order to really do justice to this as a three-dimensional relationship."

The real question for the new season, in Winter's words, was: "How can we tell stories, fun stories, that are still steeped in the DNA of the show and steeped in their love story?"

The season will kick off with Beckett going missing. The premiere is told from Castle's point of view while the second episode is told from Beckett's. It should make for a dynamic opening, testing Castle and Beckett's relationship further.

Castle season 8 premieres tonight at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
