Leah Messer and Kailyn Lowry appeared on Steve Harvey earlier this week, and during the episode, the Teen Mom 2 stars spoke of the downside of the MTV reality series.

After starring on the show for seven seasons, Messer admitted that dealing with her critics was hard, but said she's learned to ignore the hate.

"It's hard. People are so judgmental," Messer said during her appearance, according to a report by PEOPLE Magazine on Monday. "I honestly put my life out there to be a positive influence and really to reach out to people – that is my only desire. There's nothing else to gain from this, and I mean it's so painful when people are so judgmental. I just stop allowing it to affect me."

"You know, sometimes we just want to be like everybody else and think of ourselves as people who are not on TV," Lowry explained. "We want to do our own thing, but at the end of the day if we post one picture on Instagram we might cause World War III with 10,000 comments, you know?"

"I think people forget when they're watching the show that we're actually human being with feelings – they see characters versus real people," Lowry added.

Also during her Steve Harvey appearance, Messer spoke of her decision to go to rehab in May of last year, denying she sought treatment for an addiction to drugs.

"I needed help," Messer admitted. "I was on the depression and anxiety track. [I'm focused on ] doing it the right way and being able to have that platform to teach girls to do it the right way, and that's what matters to me."

For the last two seasons, Messer has been plagued with rumors of drug use, which her ex-husbands Jeremy Calvert and Corey Simms seemingly confirmed during Teen Mom 2 season six, but so far, she has maintained that her issues were only mental.
