It's official - the final moments of Captain America: Civil War will become the MCU's talking point for the foreseeable future.

The Captain America (Chris Evans)/Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) grudge match is just weeks away, and it looks like the film might embrace Mark Millar's tragic comic book ending after all. When the final credits roll, viewers will be left with a "controversial" conclusion.

"The consequences of Civil War will have an even more significant impact [than The Winter Soldier]. In Civil War, we're going to change the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Psychology, and it's an extreme shift," co-director Joe Russo told Empire (via Comic Book Movie). "[There is a] very dramatic ending that will be controversial for a lot of people."

SPOILER WARNING BELOW

Fans of the 2006 publication know that, canonically, not only do Steve Rogers' anti-registration forces lose the war, but the Star Spangled Avenger also looses his life. As the world's only other supersoldier, Bucky (Sebastian Stan) ultimately takes up the Captain America mantel until the real Caps eventually resurfaces (he's a hard man to kill, after all).

Considering Marvel Studios' penchant for reworking old tales into something fresh and unexpected, we're still loath to believe the film's titular hero will take the fall (Iron Man is the more likely choice if the writers wanted to switch it up). Despite the Russo brother's comments to Empire, the pair previously told fans they will make drastic departures from Millar's storyline.

"The original book was dealing with a different story as well as many different characters, so the intersection between this movie and the inspiring comic isn't as extensive as it was with Winter Soldier," directors Anthony and Joe Russo explained during a Tumblr Q&A. "We do use the jumping off point of government control of superheroes and the division of superheroes between sides lead by Captain America and Iron Man, but after that the movie is striking out into territory that is unique from the book.
