Piper (Taylor Schilling) is still figuring out who she is in the upcoming fourth season of Netflix's Orange Is the New Black.

Schilling recently teased what's ahead for season 4 of Orange Is the New Black, which looks to be darker than the previous three seasons.

"It gets more and more tense. Tensions are rising," Schilling said recently. "Things are getting worse."

Piper herself has taken a darker turn since the beginning of the series, taking on a panty business in season 3 and becoming as ruthless as any of the prison's toughest inmates. This, combined with the influx of new inmates and new corporate leadership will surely lead to some major conflict.

Regardless of Piper's actions, though, Schilling commended her character for essentially coming in to her own.

"I think there's something heroic in trying to be yourself. She's trying that desperately," Schilling said. "She's definitely trying to figure out who she is, so I think I appreciate her a real lot."

Schilling previously spoke about what it takes to create Piper on set, noting how there's a surprising amount of makeup involved.

"It does take time to get Piper [ready] - it takes far more makeup than you would imagine for me to look like I'm wearing absolutely no makeup," Schilling revealed. "And Piper doesn't have as much access to makeup, so she's sort of the default setting - she doesn't really have a choice - but for me, I prefer to be bare as much as possible."

She added, "It knocks away one level of artifice, and I think that is what I appreciate most about acting. It's trying to drill down to the truth of a character, or situation or a circumstance and in some cases, lots of makeup helps with that. In this situation, in the story of Piper Chapman, it really illuminates interesting parts of her that she doesn't wear any makeup."

Orange Is the New Black season 4 is slated to drop on Friday, June 17 on Netflix.
