The smartphone market has a wide array of options, but many are turning toward tech giants Apple and HTC to see if their handheld gadgets are worth spending money one.

 The HTC One and iPhone 5 are both currently being sold in the U.S., begging users to question which one they should head toward when considering a new gadget. Here is a breakdown of the key specifications for each device.

iPhone 5                                 

Apple's latest device has a 4.0-inch screen, 4G LTE with Retina Display and a 1136x640 resolution at 326 ppi. The company chooses to stick to their own operating systems and so the iPhone 5 runs on Apple's iOS 6.0.

The format of its applications display is the same as on all other Apple devices but the handheld does have some impressive features. Users can enjoy up to 225 hours of standby time and up to eight hours of talk time.

The phone is equipped with full HD 1080 pixel video recording, weighs in at 3.95 oz and has a 1 GB RAM. Siri is included and buyers can choose between 16, 32 or 64GBs of fixed internal storage. The phone can be purchased in black lined with slate, or white lined with silver.

Width is 2.31 inches (58.6 mm) and height is 4.87 inches (123.8 mm).

The phone also has Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology, an assisted compass, fingerprint resistant coating in front, a 8-megapixel iSight camera and an HD FaceTime camera with face detection in video or still images. The phone charges via USB to a computer system or phone adapter.

The iPhone 5 has up to 10 hours of video playback and up to 40 hours of audio playback. In terms of Internet use: up to eight hours on 3G and the same for LTE, and up to 10 hours on Wi-Fi.

There is the option of AirPlay out to Apple TV. An Apple ID is required for some features and the phone supports a number of languages on its keyboard and in its Siri usage.

HTC One

Along with a live home screen, the device has a 4.7-inch full HD 1080 pixel display with 468 ppi. Memory options are 32 GB or 64GB and the phone's platform is Android with HTC Sense and HTC BlinkFeed. The latter allows users to pick the social networking sites, news and feeds they want to stay updated on and they will all stream live to the phone's home screen. The phone is compliant with Bluetooth 4.0 and has dual frontal stereo speakers with built-in amplifiers plus HTC One's BoomSound.

Features include Optical Image Stabilization, Smart Flash (five levels of automatic flash depending on the distance to the subject), slow motion video recording and a variety of playback speeds. The UltraPixel Camera has BSI sensors and wide angle lens with HDR capability. The front camera has 2.1 mega pixels and there is also 1080p full HD video recording.

Sense TV allows synching with a television or remote control.
