Person of Interest series finale is just around the corner, and fans should remember that happy endings are NOT the order of the day.

The CBS series is no stranger to death. The more numbers the Machine churns out, the more often our heroes stumble and fall. Samaritan is the greatest foe Finch (Michael Emerson) has ever faced, and, in the drama's final hour, Team Machine will embark on a "suicide mission" to eliminate the Orwellian monster once and for all.

"Finch, Reese, Fusco and Shaw embark on one last mission to prevent Samaritan from destroying The Machine and cementing its hold over mankind," CBS said of the finale.

Titled "Return 0," the episode references a piece of coding language that refers to the exit status of a program where a 0 value indicates a successful execution. While that could be interpreted in either a positive or negative light in terms of the series, the writers originally penned a much darker title for the finale.

"The working title of the episode - before we settled on 'return 0,' which is a vestige of my old days as a coder - had been, 'Everyone Dies Alone,' which reflected our mood at that moment," showrunner Jonah Nolan told TV Line.

Well, that's...not encouraging at all.

Nor, for that matter, is a statement made by Emerson in regards to potential spinoff.

"The ending, I thought, was really satisfying - and still ever so slightly open-ended, so that if someone, someday wanted to reboot this thing, or have a Chapter 2 of some sort, it wouldn't be out of the question," the actor informed TV Guide. "There are survivors ... [but] not many."

Looks like you'll need to settle in with a box of tissues when Person of Interest's final episode airs on June 21.
