The Future Trunks arc in Dragon Ball Super has officially started, and from what fans could tell so far, this might very well be the best arc of the franchise to date. From the initial scenes of devastation, to the gritty and raw murder of Bulma and Mai in the hands of Black Goku, the new Future Trunks arc is pretty much what Dragon Ball fans wanted DBS to be all along.

Indeed, Episode 48 earned a very admirable and notable rating of 8.4 from its viewers, setting a record for the series for far. Considering the events that happened, however, it is really no surprise why the episode was received so well.

This is because Episode 48 showed a Dragon Ball story that is far more mature and gritty than it has even been. Dragon Ball has gone a bit dark in the past, but never at this current arc's level. In fact, the deaths of two women close to Trunks' heart is something which proved that this current arc is indeed quite different from those before it.

Dragon Ball has always been light and fun. Characters die and come back to life and enemies eventually turn into friends. Such are the norms of the Dragon Ball mythos. From what could be seen in the Future Trunks arc so far, however, this would be one story where the losses would be real, and the stakes would be higher than they ever were.

Interestingly, the catalyst for this sudden shift in Dragon Ball Super's tone and theme is the arc's main villain, a man named Black Goku. Though he bears the same appearance as the franchise's most beloved character, Black Goku is ruthless, powerful, cold and downright evil.

Takeshi Kusao, who voices Trunks, even remarked how Black Goku is indeed a villain that is worthy of notice.

"You can feel in your bones just how evil Black (Goku) is. It's incredible. From your very first look at him, he's just bad to the bone. I'll only say one thing about the end of the new chapter's first episode, but this should say it all: it's enough to make you do 'there's no way they can win,'" he said.

With the body count in the arc already rising, and with series creator Akira Toriyama already confirming that Zeno and the Gods of Destruction would be involved in the conflict, Dragon Ball Super seems to be gearing up to give fans exactly what they want.
