Wynonna Earp wormed it's way into viewers hearts and minds over the last few months, in no small part thanks to status as one of television's few safe havens for LGBTQ characters.

The Bury Your Gays trope cropped up all over television in 2016, and genre television was no exception. Wynonna Earp, which finished filming two months before The 100's Lexa catastrophe, broke the mold with the introduction of Waverly Earp (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) and Nicole Hought (Katherine Barrell). Together, the pair became WayHought, the series' premiere 'ship.

"[The LGBTQ community] want to see themselves as three-dimensional characters," executive producer Emily Andras told Spoiler TV. "They want to see them as different characters. Not every lesbian is the same."

In a perfect world, that statement wouldn't have to be emphasized. Andras knows what she's doing, and we hope showrunners across the networks get the message. It's no surprise that, when Wynonna Earp delivered exactly what TV's been missing plus a fully formed relationship, fans were on board 100 percent.

"The fan reaction has been beyond my wildest expectations. I don't even think I fully comprehended, it, the extent of the fan interaction," Barrell marveled. "But I think very surreal and it, you know, everything has kind of been happening through a screen for me and so I think once I see people in person it's really going to sink in. But it's been beautiful. It's been heartwarming. It's been extremely encouraging and I think just very positive."

WayHought won't exist without its ups and downs, however. As Waverly's currently perfecting her Exorcist audition, a potential second season will definitely throw a few curve balls their way. It's a good thing Hought's now in league with the Black Badge Division.

Syfy has yet to renew Wynonna Earp for a second season.
