The truth - it's an elusive concept on The Blacklist, and everyone's crossing their fingers and toes in the hope that Alexander Kirk can provide just a smidgen of it.

When you live in Liz Keen's (Megan Boone) world of secrets, facts are the most valuable currency around. Now, as season 4 begins, Boone's character will have to decide whether or not Kirk's (Ulrich Thomsen) are counterfeit. It won't be a verdict reach lightly - or quickly, for that matter.

In fact, Liz will continue to mull over that question through episode 2. Titled "Mato," the Sept. 29 hour will see Red (James Spader) and Tom (Ryan Eggold) continue their hunt for the missing profiler.

"Red enlists Tom and the Task Force to help track a notorious bounty hunter who may know Alexander Kirk's next move," NBC teased. "Meanwhile, Liz struggles to decide if Kirk is trustworthy."

Although the season 4 promo shows Red spitting lead at Liz's kidnapper, The Blacklist won't fast track their reunion. Instead, Keen will have several episodes to mull over everything her alleged father has to offer.

"[Kirk] is a character who has a firm grasp on truths about Elizabeth Keen's past, unlike any character we've had before," series creator Jon Bokenkamp told TV Line. "Over time, he will be unpacking truths that are undeniable about who Elizabeth Keen is, where she comes from, what her connection is to Kirk, to her mother and, ultimately, to Reddington."

For a woman who has spent the last three years chipping away at her past, Kirk's proposed treasure trove of knowledge is the equivalent of Tantalus' hanging feast. Unfortunately, The Blacklist has proved time and time again that there are only a handful of trustworthy people in this world. At this point, even Red's credibility has been called into question. Can Liz really take a leap of faith, and, if she does, will it come back to bite her?
