Malaysian officials banned an upcoming Erykah Badu concert after a local newspaper published a photo of the singer with the Arabic word for Allah tattooed on her upper body.

The controversial photo, which was deemed "an insult to Islam," appeared in Malaysia's English-language daily newspaper The Star yesterday, causing outrage among the country's Muslim community.

Islam forbids tattoos, and the use of Allah outside of religious worship is considered disrespectful.

It's unknown if Badu's body art is permanent, but Malaysia's Culture, Arts and Heritage ministry issued a statement saying the tattoo "triggered public criticism that could jeopardize national security and cause a negative impact to the government's image."

According to the BBC, the ministry was unaware of Badu's tattoo when her concert was approved.

The Star issued an apology yesterday, stating, "We deeply regret any offense caused to Muslims and sincerely apologize for the oversight."

Badu's concert was set to take place in Kuala Lumpur. Show organizers are reportedly trying get the government to lift the ban.

The Grammy-award winning singer addressed the situation on Twitter by simply saying, "I deserve it."
