This Sunday is New Year's Day, the federal holiday which celebrates the beginning of our newest calendar year, and though the day falls on a Sunday, hours at several places will be affected on Monday, January 2 as well.  

Several businesses, offices, and other places may have altered hours as a result of the holiday. Below is a list of expected hours for various places:  

OPEN: 

National Parks: Most parks will be closed on Sunday, Jan. 1, but should resume normal hours on Monday, Jan, 2  

Private Businesses: Check with local establishments to see what hours they may have each day. Some may be closed entirely, operate on a normal schedule, or may have reduced hours.  

Restaurants: Expect most chain restaurants to be open and operating with normal hours both days 

Retail Stores: If you need to do some shopping, most stores like Walmart, Target, Kohl's, Macy's, and more should be open normal hours both days. Places like Costco, Sam's Club and Aldi will be closed on Sunday. Check with individual locations of different stores to see planned hours for both days.  

Transportation Services: While transportation services should be open, the levels of service may be altered to reflect a holiday schedule. Check locally, but some of the more major transit services across the U.S. have the following schedules:  

     Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA): Both Rail and Bus will have Sunday service schedules for both Sunday and Monday 

     Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA): Subway, buses, Commuter Rail, commuter boat/ferry, and the RIDE will provide regular Sunday service on Sunday, Jan. 1. On Monday, Jan. 2, subway, buses, Commuter Rail, commuter boat/Ferry, and the RIDE will once again operate on Sunday schedules.  

     Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA): On Sunday, Jan. 1, Metro-North lines East of the Hudson, New York City Subway, Buses and the Staten Island Railway will operate on a Sunday schedule, while Metro-North lines West of the Hudson will operate on a regular weekend schedule and the LIRR will operate on a holiday/weekend schedule.  On Monday, Jan. 2, New York City Subways and Buses and the Staten Island Railway will operate on Sunday schedules, Metro-North lines East of the Hudson will operate on a Saturday schedule, Metro-North lines West of the Hudson will operate on a Weekend schedule and LIRR will resume regular weekday service, but with off-peak fares all day.  

      Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA): Metrorail and Metro Bus rides will be free after midnight on Sunday until 3 a.m.  

CLOSED: 

Banks: Most, if not all banks are expected to be closed both Sunday and Monday, though you should check with your specific financial institution to be sure 

Courts: State and local courts are closed both days 

Department of Motor Vehicles: All DMV offices are closed both days 

Federal Offices: All federal offices (like IRS etc.) are closed 

Libraries: Check with your local establishment, but all are expected to be closed 

Municipal offices: Municipal offices are expected to be closed 

Post Office: A;; U.S. Post Offices are closed, and mail service is suspended on both days 

Sanitation Department: Sanitation servies and garbage collection is suspended 

Schools: All schools are closed 

State Offices: State offices should be closed both days 

U.S. Stock Market: Financial markets are closed both days
