The season 9 finale of Grey's Anatomy showed intern Joe and Alex Karev finally express their love for one another but leading in to the next season, Shonda Rhimes said viewers should expect many breakups.

The storm brought the two doctors together and in the final moments of the season 9 finale, Karev told Joe he loves her and the two kiss. Karev had clear feelings for Joe for most of the season but never made the move before the finale. Joe at one point was also dating another doctor at the hospital, but then turned to Alex when he physically abused her following an altercation.

Rhimes said season 9 was the "season of romance" but that season 10 will be the "season of break-ups."

Alex told Arizona in season 9 that he does not have the best track record with women, having Izzie Stevens leave him and the same with a woman who had amnesia and massive facial reconstruction following an accident. Alex named her Ava and she left the hospital with her husband when Alex did not speak up and give her a reason to stay with him.

Fans will have to wait until season 10 to see the fate of Joe and Alex's relationship.

Among the couple's that may face a breakup when the ABC series returns in the fall is Callie Torres and Arizona Robbins. The storyline will be how they get past - or if they even can - Arizona cheating on her partner with a visiting doctor, played by former One Tree Hill star Hilarie Burton.

The plot in season 10 with regards to their relationship will largely focus on "how she's going to take this and what she's going to do next," according to Rhimes, who added, "How Arizona is going to figure out what [her infidelity] means is going to be interesting."

Season 10 of Grey's Anatomy begins in the fall Thursdays on ABC. Watch the video below to see Joe and Alex interact in the two part finale of season 9.
