It is now confirmed that Penelope Cruz is going to take the role of Donatella Versace in the coming "American Crime Story" Season 3. There are strong rumors before that Lady Gaga will play the character of the famed designer, but the 42-year-old actress just signed on.

"American Crime Story" Season 3 will feature the killing of the known label founder Gianni Versace. The founder of Versace has been slain by the serial murderer named Andrew Cunanan in 1997.

It has been known that when Gianni Versace died, Donatella Versace takes over to manage the brand. "American Crime Story" Season 3 will be based on Maureen Orth's "Vulgar Favours," The Independent reported.

Moreover, before the official announcement of Penelope Cruz will take the role of Donatella Versace, it is first reported that the character will be played by an A-list star. In fact, everyone thought that it will be played by Lady Gaga instead of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" star in "American Crime Story" Season 3.

The claim grows stronger when Ryan Murphy himself entertained the thought that Lady Gaga could be the perfect star to play the role in "American Crime Story" Season 3. However, the 51-year-old screenwriter told Variety in January that the "American Horror Story" star is too busy to be involved on the show.

Ryan Murphy revealed that time that Lady Gaga has to do Super Bowl, "A Star is Born" and an upcoming tour. Thus, the "Million Reasons" hitmaker has no time to do "American Crime Story" Season 3 anymore.

"And when you're going to do a show like Versace, it's a five-month commitment, it's a very big show, we're shooting it all over the world," Ryan Murphy explained. Meanwhile, Penelope Cruz joins in Edgar Ramirez (Gianni Versace) and Darren Criss (Andrew Cunanan) in the upcoming "American Crime Story" Season 3. The show is expected to be released in 2018 on FX.
