2018 has claimed its second celebrity couple. Reports have surfaced that singer-songwriter Jack Antonoff and actress Lena Dunham broke off their relationship.

Five Years Together

Antonoff and Dunham first met through their mutual friend comedian Mike Birbiglia. The comedian paired the singer-songwriter and music producer and Girls creator together for a blind date in 2012. The duo had instant chemistry. Antonoff even moved into Dunham's home in Brooklyn, and the couple ventured out in public together numerous times, including wearing their respective partner's merchandise.

They Drifted Apart

Someone close to both parties stated that the reason behind their December breakup was the fact that both Antonoff and Dunham drifted apart from each other.

Work might have played a factor in their split. Dunham's HBO comedy Girls ended on April 16, 2017, and portrayed activist Valerie Solanas for an episode of American Horror Story: Cult. Dunham has not revealed any new projects as of this story.

Antonoff had a more successful year as a songwriter and a producer as he worked a diverse group of recording artists. Bleachers frontman created blockbuster hits for Lorde ("Green Light," "Sober," and "Liability"), P!nk ("Beautiful Trauma"), St. Vincent ("Los Ageless"), and Taylor Swift ("Look What You Made Me Do"). Antonoff also released Bleachers' sophomore album, Gone Now, which included several contributions from Dunham.

Twitter Reacts To The Breakup

Fans of the couple posted mournful tweets when they found out that Antonoff and Dunham broke up.

"I just found out they were dating a few months ago and now this, this relationship was too short for me! I have whiplash," wrote one user.

"Lena Dunham and Jack Antonoff broke up, and I am distraught," wrote another user.

However, the couple's haters rejoiced and mocked the couple's fans using graphics and video clips.

"We're only 8 days into 2018 and its already canceled because Lena Dunham and Jack Antonoff broke up and nothing can top that so we're done see yall next year," wrote one user.

Dunham's Controversial History Revisited

The breakup could not come at the worst possible time for Dunham. The comedienne and actress's controversial commentary has come back to haunt her.

The Girls creator has spoken out regarding wishing she received an abortion in a 2016 podcast, stood up for immigrant women, and even her participation in 2017's women marches.

Even months before the Harvey Weinstein scandal unloaded a plethora of sexual misconduct allegations, Dunham made a controversial statement that women "cannot win in Hollywood."

Despite the controversy that Dunham faces every time she tries to make a stand, her words did not partake in the outcome in her breakup with Antonoff.
