Ben Affleck’s father, Timothy Affleck, opened up about his son’s very public issues. He pinpointed one reason as the cause of the famous actor’s alcoholism and high-profile divorce with Jennifer Garner.

Timothy Affleck Blames Hollywood For Ben's Troubles

Timothy spoke about both Ben and his other son, Casey Affleck’s negative attention lately. Ben was called out for telling Rose Gowan, “I told him to stop doing that,” in reference to her sexual assault claims against Harvey Weinstein. He also split from Garner back in 2015 after reports spread that he had an affair with their nanny. As for Casey, he was nearly banned from the Oscars after he was accused of sexual harassment in 2010.

“It has taken a toll on both of my sons,” said Timothy in an interview with Grazia recently. “Hollywood is a disgusting place. I think that’s been a major factor in Ben’s drinking. You’re kind of forced to develop a persona that is hard to shed and go home to your family. It affects your whole life. I think that’s one of the dangers of the film industry.”

He also took the blame himself for Ben’s arguably fall from grace. He said that his own struggle with alcohol played a part in Ben checking into rehab. He described himself as a “chronic, severe alcoholic,” and dealt with the disease for multiple years. Still, Timothy said he has recovered and noted that is a reason Ben has been adamant about overcoming it as well.

Is There Hope For Ben Affleck?

When it came to Ben’s split from Garner, Timothy also faulted Hollywood for the ended relationship.

“It’s very difficult to balance family life in the midst of global stardom,” added Timothy. “It’s a hard, taxing life. In the world outside of the entertainment industry, marriages end all the time. It’s as common as dishwater, it’s nothing to dither about.”

Timothy revealed that Ben is taking the steps he needs to have a healthy and “balanced” life. Still, he kept quiet on sexual assault claims against both of his famous sons. Aside from the incident with Gowan, Ben sent out an apology after reports swirled that he groped actor and then MTV VJ Hilarie Burton.

He advised the publication to ask his sons about the incident. He maintained he isn’t into that part of their lives, but added that what he does know is that “they’re both kind and good men. They treat women well…”
