Admit it, it's hard to be friends with an ex after a nasty breakup. However, people should take a cue from the following former celebrity couples who chose to stay friends.

Fergie and Josh Duhamel

Leaving a relationship and moving on is hard, but setting aside differences and remaining close despite what happened is just plain tough, sometimes, almost impossible. But of late, former love birds Josh Duhamel and Fergie are ones who seemed to have proven the unthinkable is actually doable.

Remember when Fergie got bashed for her national anthem blunder at the NBA All-Star Game? Well, her knight in shining armor (read: her ex Duhamel) came rushing at her defense. To be fair, the two, who announced their split late last year, maintained that they would still be friends.

In his interview during a guest stint at The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Duhamel had nothing but kind words for Fergie. On her rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner," the When in Rome actor described the singer as "crazy talented."

"She's an amazing woman — an amazing human being, really," Duhamel shared.

Fergie and Duhamel were married for eight years before deciding to split. They share a son, Axl Jack.

Gwyneth Paltrow And Chris Martin

Another celebrity couple who chose to stay friends are Gwyneth Paltrow and ex, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. Actually, the actress recently referred to him as "brother," so clearly there is no bad blood between the once-sweethearts.

For his 41st birthday, Paltrow made an act of love by wishing Martin a happy birthday on her Instagram account. The awe-inspiring photo showed her, the vocalist, and their two children, Apple and Moses.

"Thank you for giving me these two," Paltrow added in the caption.

In an interview, the 45-year-old even revealed she and Martin remained close after they decided to call it quits. Paltrow admitted they worked a wonderful friendship, which would be essential for their kids.

Drew Barrymore And Will Kopelman

Last, but not the least, Drew Barrymore and ex-husband Will Kopelman, who recently showed just how two former lovers can still work it out even after they have closed their book on their love story. In an appreciation post on Instagram, the 43-year-old Santa Clarita Diet star narrated how her former beau had become helpful for her to able to do her job.

"Thank you for always being the best dad and supporting and enabling me to do what I need and want to do," Barrymore said to Kopelman.

Barrymore and Kopelman tied the knot in 2012. They share two kids, Olive and Frankie.
