Congrats are in order for newly engaged Destiny’s Child member Michelle Williams. The singer dished on how she met her fiance, Pastor Chad Johnson, and what led to him popping the big question.

Future Mrs. Johnson

Wedding bells are ringing for Williams and her now future husband. Williams announced her engagement just days after she performed with Beyoncé at the Coachella music festival.

While she announced the news Thursday, Appril 19, she revealed that Johnson popped the question on March 21.

“We could not contain this any longer!” said Williams to PEOPLE when she dished on keeping their engagement under wraps for nearly a month.

Williams and Johnson might seem like an odd pairing considering her pop star status and his pastoral career, and she said she didn't expect a romance to come out of their first meeting.

Right Place At The Right Time

“I was in a horrible, dark place,” said Williams, who attended a spiritual retreat in Arizona in March of last year after a breakup following her ex’s infidelity. Johnson, who is a chaplain for major sports teams like the L.A. Dodgers and Pittsburgh Steelers, hosted the retreat.

He said he and Williams were both in negative spaces in their lives when they were introduced. While they had an obvious connection, Williams made it clear she “did not go to flirt with the pastor.”

They decided to keep in touch after the retreat and one of Johnson’s friends told him he should ask Williams out. He joked that it didn’t go the way he initially thought when he told her the two should “connect.”

“Connect??????” Johnson said Williams text back to him.

While he was convinced she had turned him down, she sent him a direct message on Instagram in response to one of his stories roughly a week later. They went from DMing each other on social media to texting and talking on FaceTime. They didn’t go out until about three months later when they attended a wedding in the Dominican Republic together.

Johnson said that’s when he made it clear to her that he wanted to take their relationship past friends. As for Williams, she said she kept the early days of her friendship and romance with Johnson a secret because she didn’t know where it would lead.

Inside His Special Proposal

It’s safe to say it’s leading Williams down the aisle after he proposed last month. They reenacted Johnson’s now infamous “connect” text message at the same hotel Johnson was in at the time. Johnson cued a waiter to come over and play a special video for Williams, which made it clear he was about to propose.

As for their plans, Williams, who has already said yes to the dress, said they will have a short engagement.
