Powerful indie drama Fruitvale Station has turned out to be a success in limited theaters, and BET plans on airing a special behind-the-scenes special for the film tonight (July 15.)

Fruitvale Station chronicles the last 24 hours of the life of Oscar Grant, a 22-year-old man who was shot to death at a San Francisco train station. The film was based on a true story and stars Michael B. Jordan (Friday Night Lights, The Wire) as Grant.

The film, distributed by The Weinstein Company, was released in seven locations over the past weekend and grossed an average of $54,000 per screen, the highest per-screen-average of any film in theaters over the weekend.

"It's hard to watch this film and not be moved," said Weinstein Company representative Erik Lomis on Sunday. Fruitvale Station comes off the heels of the "not guilty" verdict in the racially-charged George Zimmerman-Trayvon Martin case.

"Obviously, we had no idea of what would be going on at the time we dated the movie, but it's very topical," Lomis admitted.

"BET has been a wonderful friend to us, the cast and team behind Fruitvale Station," said Weinstein Company COO David Glasser. He added that Grant's story is the type of story that can easily be forgotten in the 24-hour news cycle, but having this film will "continue to make an impact across the country."

BET President of Original Programming Loretha Jones added that Grant's story will "forever be a part of our history," and that they were proud to be partnering with The Weinstein Company for the film.

She said that it was important to "share the important truth of the incidents surrounding Oscar Grant that have deeply affected the African American community."

The special will air tonight (July 15) at 7:30 p.m. on BET.

Fruitvale Station is still running in limited engagements, but it will open nationwide on July 26.
