Actress Tatiana Maslany shares her frustration on women superhero tropes she finds annoying, and her journey to get green and mean as Marvel's new "She-Hulk".

In a recent interview with The Guardian, the Marvel star opens up about her acting career and thoughts on her upcoming project with Marvel. The 36-year-old actress expressed that she is "looking forward to the day when a woman playing a superhero is no big deal."

"I'm really interested in when these marginalised voices get to speak without it being like: 'Oh my God, it's all women,' or, 'Oh my God, this is a story about a queer couple,' and those stories become as innately expected as they are now special." Tatiana ranted.

According to the Emmy-winning actress, she has felt that the "strong female lead" label among women superheroes has become irritating as it comes off as "reductive". She is hopeful for the day when a female portraying a superhero won't come off as different or unusual to fans.

"It's just as much a shaving off of all the nuances, and just as much of a trope. It's a box that nobody fits into. Even the phrase is frustrating. It's as if we're supposed to be grateful that we get to be that." The actress explained.

Has Marvel Improved Their Treatment on Women Superheroes?

Maslany also told The Guardian about her observations on Marvel, and how the studio has changed their treatment in depicting female superheroes.

Back then, female superheroes had existed solely to cater to the male gaze with their titilating appearance. Tatiana commented that "Marvel Studios has been slow to redress the balance" as it took Scarlett Johansson 11 years to get a Black Widow movie. Now, the current script for "She-Hulk" written by Jessica Gao contains improvement to the depiction of female Marvel characters.

Becoming One with She-Hulk

The "Orphan Black" actress expressed her thoughts on her upcoming role as Jennifer Walters, and the idea of being a normal kind of superhero.

"What drew me to the role is how human and how unheroic she is, and how little interest she has in pursuing all that." She explained.

The actress also enjoyed smashing things with her co-star Mark Ruffalo, who has spent the last 10 years playing Bruce Banner. "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law" is set to release on August 18, 2022 which will be available to stream on Disney+.
