The Americans star Keri Russell discussed what was ahead for season 2 in a recent interview.

Russell, who plays Elizabeth Jennings on the FX show, talked about the new season recently while doing a press junket for her new film, Austenland.

"I think a lot has changed for [Elizabeth] in this year," Russell told HitFix, in a report published Tuesday. "That's what's so exciting about playing this character - for someone who sees things so black and white - this massive shift has taken place from the moment the husband says, 'We should defect.' Even though maybe she knew it was coming at some level it's a massive sea change and then the death of all these people in her life. All these massive supporters."

The Americans Season 2 Spoilers: Phillip and Elizabeth's Daughter to Become a Threat?

Elizabeth was last seen in the season 1 finale accepting Phillip (Matthew Rhys) back into their family with a simple, "come home." Russell said that she didn't know if Elizabeth would ever defect to Russia with Phillip and their kids.

"I don't know what's going to happen," she continued. "I really don't think she would ever turn, but I think she's sensing the reality a lot more. What are they gonna do? They have these kids who are becoming adults. I dunno, but yes, when the show started I think she says absolutely, 'We'll do our job here and then we'll take them back and raise them as we should.'"

The Americans Season 2 Spoilers: Will Stan's Backstory Finally Be Explored?

One of the biggest questions going forward with The Americans season 2 is whether or not Margo Martindale, who played KGB supervisor Claudia in season 1, would be returning. Martindale will be one of the leads on a new CBS show called The Millers this fall so she might not be able to come back for The Americans.

"I still feel like we could weave her in one or two episodes," Russell said. "She's too good to let go, but I don't know how the timing works with that."

Season 2 of The Americans is scheduled to premiere in early 2014.
