As Grey's Anatomy star Kevin McKidd gears up to direct another episode of the ABC series, he hinted details about a "clfffhanger" mid-season involving a leading character returning to the show.

The new season will be broken up into two parts: the first 12 episode will air, the show will take a hiatus, and then the last 12 will air them, all in two big blocks. McKidd told The Huffington Post that the episode that he is directing this year is going to be the eighth one of season 10 in the show's first block, and one of the major story points in it will a Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital character coming back to the show.

"There's a big build-up to a pretty amazing cliffhanger for the 12th episode before we take our hiatus. A key character comes back in episode 8 that plays into the cliffhanger in episode 12," he said.

When asked to elaborate on the "key character," without revealing the character's identity McKidd said it will be someone from Grey's "past-slash-present" coming back.

"That's all I'm saying ... no ghosts though!" he joked.

The actor added that he is not sure yet which episode he is directing in the season's second block airing after the hiatus.

Grey's Anatomy season 10 premieres Thursday, Sept. 26 at 9 p.m. ET on ABC. Actress Sandra Oh publicly announced earlier in August that she will be leaving the ABC series after season 10, giving up her role as Owen's long-time love interest: his on-again, off-again girlfriend Cristina Yang. She ended their relationship once again in the season 9 finale, which aired earlier in the year, after deciding for the both of them that Owen would not be truly happy with just her and no children.
