Samsung has confirmed the name of its next generation Galaxy smartphone; it will, as expected, be called the Samsung Galaxy S3.

A Samsung executive confirmed the name on the company's Q1 earnings call this week, as Galaxy fans eagerly await the release of the new device.

The Galaxy S has been Samsung's flagship smartphone in the smartphone market over recent years, and the Galaxy S3 should go into direct competition with Apple's iPhone 4S, and iPhone 5, which will be released later this year.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 will be unveiled at the company's Mobile Unpacked  event, which will take place in London, England on May 3. The company has also promised that the smartphone will be available for purchase very soon after the unveiling event.

Samsung has taken a leaf out of Apple's marketing book, by building up the release of its new smartphone, allowing spits and spats of information to be leaked in the months preceding its unveiling. The company sent out invitations to the unveiling event recently, simply saying, "Come and Meet the Next Galaxy."

It is believed that the Galaxy S3 will feature a new 1.4GHz Exynos quad-core processor. It will come with a 4.7-inch display, an 8-megapixel camera, 1GB RAM, and 16GB storage, according to various rumors surrounding the device.

The android-powered smartphone should be available on all major U.S. cell phone carriers including Sprint, Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile.
